Hojicha (pronounced: HOH-jee-cha) is a Japanese green tea that is roasted at high temperatures after steaming. This roasting process gives it its characteristic copper-brown color and a unique, mild aroma.

Hojicha is known for its warm, soothing flavor. It is mild, nutty, slightly caramel-like and has a pleasant earthy note. Unlike many other green teas, it is barely bitter and free of grassy notes.

Yes, but not much. The roasting process breaks down a large portion of the caffeine. This makes Hojicha an ideal drink for the evening or for people who are sensitive to caffeine.

Both are green teas, but they differ significantly:

Matcha is ground into a fine powder without being roasted. It is vibrant green and has an intense, slightly bitter umami flavor with a high caffeine content.

Hojicha is roasted before being ground; it is brown and has a mild, nutty flavor with a low caffeine content.

Our Hojicha comes from the Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan, one of the country's most renowned tea regions. Our Matcha originates from Kagoshima.

1. Place 1 tsp of Hojicha into a bowl
2. Add hot water (80°C)
3. Whisk into a paste using a bamboo whisk
4. Pour milk & tea together into a glass.
