What is Hojicha?
Hojicha (pronounced: HOH-ji-cha) is a Japanese green tea that is roasted at high temperatures after steaming. This roasting process gives it its characteristic coppery-brown color and a unique, mild aroma.
What does Hojicha taste like?
Hojicha is known for its warm, soothing taste. It is mild, nutty, slightly caramel-like, and has a pleasant earthy note. Unlike many other green teas, it is hardly bitter and free from grassy notes.
Does Hojicha contain caffeine?
Yes, but significantly less than regular green tea or coffee. The roasting process breaks down most of the caffeine. This makes Hojicha an ideal beverage for the evening or for those sensitive to caffeine.
What is the difference between Hojicha and Matcha?
Both are green teas, but differ significantly:
Matcha is unroasted and ground into a fine powder. It is bright green and has an intense, slightly tart umami flavor with high caffeine content.
Hojicha is roasted, brown, and has a mild, nutty flavor with low caffeine content.
Where does RokuTea's Hojicha come from?

How do I properly prepare Hojicha?
Preparation is simple and forgiving even at higher temperatures:
Quantity: Use about 2–3 grams (approx. 1 teaspoon) of Hojicha per cup (200 ml).
Temperature: Pour water over it at about 70-80 °C.
Steeping time: Stir well for 2-3 minutes to get a strong, full-bodied infusion.
Tip: Hojicha is excellent for multiple infusions.
Can I also drink Hojicha cold?
Absolutely! Cold-brewed Hojicha is a fantastic, refreshing thirst quencher. To do this, place the tea leaves in a pitcher, fill it with cold water, and let the tea steep in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours (or overnight).
How do I make a Hojicha Latte?
Mix 1 teaspoon of Hojicha powder with 100 ml of hot water (approx. 80 °C) and stir until the powder has dissolved.
Add frothed warm milk (plant-based milk such as oat milk works particularly well).
Sweeten with a little maple syrup or honey to taste – and your creamy Hojicha Latte is ready!
What's the best way to store Hojicha?
Always store your Hojicha in an airtight container in a cool, dry, and dark place (e.g., in a kitchen cupboard). Avoid moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Please do not store tea in the refrigerator, as condensation can impair the aroma.
